Ownership

Ownership

See who owns a stock and who is trading it, from insider Form 4 transactions and 13F fund holdings.

Command Terminal
OWN

Type OWN in the command terminal to open the Ownership widget. To open it for a specific stock, type the symbol followed by OWN, for example AAPL OWN.

Overview

The Ownership widget shows who holds a company and who has been buying or selling it. It has two tabs: Insiders and Institutions. Each tab reads from public filings, so every row traces back to a document you can open.

Like the Financials widget, it takes part in link groups: it follows link-group broadcasts and feeds the active symbol, so changing the symbol in a linked widget changes the symbol here.

Opening the Ownership Widget

Press the backtick key (`) to focus the command terminal:

  • Type OWN and hit Enter to open the widget on the current symbol
  • Type AAPL OWN and hit Enter to open it for Apple

Insiders

The Insiders tab lists Form 3, 4 and 5 transactions filed by a company's officers, directors and 10% owners. Rows are sorted newest first, and the widget loads up to the latest 500.

A toggle at the top controls which transactions are shown:

  • Open market (the default) shows buys and sells made on the market, which are transaction codes P and S
  • All also includes grants, option exercises, tax withholding and gifts

Each row has these columns:

  • Date: the transaction date stated in the filing
  • Insider: the name and title, or Director or 10% owner when no officer title applies
  • Type: Buy, Sell, Grant, Exercise, Tax or Gift. Derivative transactions are marked "(deriv)". An amended filing is marked "amended" and replaces the rows it amends
  • Shares, Price and Value
  • Owned after: the insider's holding after the transaction
  • A link to the filing on sec.gov

A summary strip above the table counts open-market buys and sells over the last 90 days, with the total value of each.

Institutions

The Institutions tab shows 13F fund holders for one quarter. Funds report their holdings within 45 days of quarter end, so the default quarter is the latest one whose filing deadline has passed. The previous and next buttons step through quarters.

The summary shows the number of funds, the total shares and the total value. Two views are available:

  • Top holders: each fund with its shares, value and share of the reported total, ranked by value. A fund that files several lines for the stock is shown as one row
  • Changes: the change in shares against the prior quarter, the current shares and the value, with a label of New, Added, Reduced or Sold out

Option positions are marked Put or Call and shown apart from the fund's shares. The table ranks funds by value; when the quarter has more lines than it loads, a line under the table says so.

Where the Data Comes From

The widget reads the Ownership API of the SEC filings service, which is built from public SEC filings. The service syncs history nightly and takes in new Form 3, 4 and 5 filings within seconds of their being filed. The Ownership tables load that data when you open a tab or change the symbol; the Insider Feed widget streams new filings live.

Every row carries the time the public could first see the filing, which is the SEC acceptance time plus one minute. The widget uses that time for ordering and for the age column in the Insider Feed. Transaction dates are whatever the filing states.
